CPT or College Placement Test in USA:
College Placement Test or CPT tests your reading, writing and maths skills. The CPT is recognized nationwide. You may take it anywhere in the United States and have your scores sent to a college.
To find out whether you need to take the CPT or not, you need to consult your local academic advisor. If you have previously attended college and want to take the maths, chemistry or reading class – you may not have to take the CPT, but again you have to consult your local academic advisor.
In some situationa, if you have taken the SAT or ACT and achieved the appropriate scores, you may be exempted from taking the College placement test or the CPT. In this case and the above ones, you always need to confirm with your advisor.
If you have taken a placement test at one college, you may use the scores at another college and your scores may be converted suitably.
The CPT scores have a validity of two years like many other placement tests. Even if you never enroll in any courses, the scores are valid for two years only.
Types of Questions in the college placement test CPT:
The CPT measures your Reading comprehension, english grammar knowledge and basic Mathematics skills.
The CPT is not a pass or fail test.
Your scores help the counsellors and advisors to place you appropriately in the college maths or English courses. So the test is for assessing your abilities.
Practise materials for the CPT can be found online, at your local bookstores or your college library.
If for some reason you want to retake the test, you can do it once in a year. For that you need to consult your local academic advisor.
About the CPT Test:
- The test is for 2 hours.
- No calculators, notes or dictionaries are allowed in the exam.
- Even if you dont have knowledge of computers, you will be clearly instructed before the exam.
- There are simple and clear methods to take the test. Computer knowledge is not required.
- There are special arrangements for the disable students.
- Scores are not sent by email or online. You have to meet the advisor for finding out your scores.
CPT Question Solving Tips: Sample Mathematics questions:
The most problematic questions are considered to be the Algebra and Arithematic ones.
In case of algebra multiple choice questions when you are given a equation, an easy way to find out the correct answer among the four options is to substitute all the four options and find out which one suits best.
For example:
1) x² – 7x + 10 = 0
The normal way of solving this would be x² – 5x – 2x + 10 = 0
(x-5)(x-2)=0
So the two solutions can be 2 and 5.
If you have these options and have to find out the correct one:

Just fill the options in the equation provided x² – 7x + 10 = 0
First one: 2 -> it comes to be 4 – 14 + 10 = 0 So its really zero. The first option is correct.
Second one: 6 -> 36 – 42 + 10 This is not equal to zero so its not the correct option. The other two are also incorrect.
2)
Here the denominator of first fraction is x(x+1)
The denominator of first fraction is (x+1)(x-1)
The denominator of first fraction is x(x²-1) = x(x+1)(x-1)
So the least common denominator is x+1 here.
3) A question like f(x) = x4- 2x + 1
What is f(-x) We proceed as (-x)4 – 2(-x) + 1 = x4 + 2x + 1
4) Sometimes a graph is provided. A vertical line is drawn on the x axis or y axis The x axis is the horizontal axis and the y axis is the vertical axis. If a line is drawn from point 3 on x axis parallel to the y axis, then the equation of that line will be x=3. Its simple as that.
If a line is drawn parallel to the x axis from a point y=3 , then the equation of that line is y=3.
