However, some of the classic films are still as good today as they were when they were made. Here are some excellent movies you may have forgotten.

In 1958, the film “A Night to Remember” was released, and it may be the most authentic account regarding the Titanic sinking. At the time it was written, there were many survivors still living, and extensive interviews were conducted, providing many details about the night.

Among the many films that John Wayne appeared in, some were bad, some mediocre, and some were excellent. In the latter category is “Stagecoach”, which really launched his career. Better performances are often considered to have been “The Quiet Man”, “The Shootist”, “The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance”, “The Sands of Iwo Jima” and “The Searchers”. His 1954 movie, “The High and the Mighty” is one that was seldom shown for several decades. It is set aboard a flight from Hawaii bound for California that encounters problems halfway there. It was the original disaster type film and offered a large ensemble cast.

If you are looking for a romantic comedy, “Pride and Prejudice” is an excellent choice. This 1940 offering stars Greer Garson and Laurence Olivier in an adaptation of the Jane Austen novel. “The Philadelphia Story” from the same year featured Katherine Hepburn as a socialite on the eve of her second wedding. Cary Grant played her ex-husband, and Jimmy Stewart was the tabloid reporter who was there to exploit the ceremony.

For horror fans, there is “The Legend of Hell House” from 1973 with Roddy McDowell as a psychic returning to a haunted house that nearly killed him several years earlier. “The Exorcist” remains a classic in the genre, as does “Poltergeist”.

Two truly interesting films that many have never seen are “55 Days at Peking” and “The Gods Must Be Crazy”. The first covers the siege of the foreign compound in Peking during the Boxer Rebellion of 1900. It stars Ava Gardner, David Niven, and Charlton Heston. The second is the story of a soda bottle thrown from an airplane and found by a tribe of Bushmen, who think it a gift from the gods. However, it causes jealousy, contention, and strife in a society that had known only peace. One young man volunteers to carry it to the end of the world and throw it off the cliff. Along the way, he is aided by some offbeat and hilarious characters.

Mystery buffs might prefer films like “Death on the Nile”, “Rebecca”, “Witness for the Prosecution”, or “Murder on the Orient Express”. Or is you are in the mood for a screwball comedy, you might like “Bringing up Baby”, starring Cary Grant, Hope and Crosby in “Road to Utopia” or “Hold That Ghost” with Abbott and Costello.
