A Red Hat Certified Technician that is RHCT is a professional who is a certified expert in lower level Linux and thus qualifies for advanced Certification in the same field. This certification course is offered by RedHat Inc, based in the USA. Such a certification means that the particular candidate understands the Red Hat Linux system fully, and it was first introduced in January 2003.
However, unlike some other certified programs, the RHCT has to first fulfill a few pre-requisites before taking the final test. He has to take a live hands-on test at the Red Hat centers to qualify for taking up the course. The single exam has two parts consisting of Troubleshooting and system maintenance and Installation and Configuration. The time given for this is two hours and the minimum ct-ff that a candidate needs to achieve is 70%.This also entails the cost of taking such an exam to go higher as the candidate has to also pay for traveling to the Red center. A drawback, if we may call it, is that the RHCT certification is valid say for a particular edition of Linux until the next major edition is introduced. Thus, a professional has to keep updating himself with the new skills introduced by Red Hat Inc.
Red Hat also offers training to candidates to appear for these exams. This training is available online as well as real-world. Training though is available is not a mandatory requirement. Some of the recommended books for Linux are Linux Administrator Street Smarts: A Real World Guide to Linux Certification skills, Linux journal, PC magazine, etc. A lot of reference material is available online also. Once a candidate becomes a RedHat Certified Technician, he gets a certificate and a logo from red Hat Inc and is eligible to work as technician, system administrator, network administrator, system engineer, web engineer, and developer.
Red Hat Com has all the possible information about RHCT. There are sites that are available for students who are preparing for the certification examination to have an access to exercises as well as study guides for the purpose.
