You Are Here: Home » Credit » How You Can Give Your Credit Report a Makeover and Increase Your Credit Worthiness

You want to know why some people walk out of creditors’ offices smiling and why some drag their legs with a cold face out of the place? It’s an open secret and it is a wonder why some do not know how this situation can be overcome. The bottom-line is this: you are either credit worthy or not.

What makes someone worthy of loans has been known to be a bad score or loads of negative listings on one’s file. But do you know that just one collection or any other negative account is enough to do the damage?

The methods that are available for cleaning a bad report and turning it around into a squeaky clean one are of two types: the self-help (also called do-it-yourself and auto-repair), and the repair services agency methods. You will have to decide the one most suitable for you if you are embarking on a repair task.

In the event that you opt for the self-repair method, you will be paying attention to a number of things:

- Find out the number of negatives you have on your file.
- Find out which ones have been recently placed there and the old ones.
- Learn which accounts carry much weight than the rest (e.g. foreclosures, bankruptcies. Etc.)
- Write dispute letters to information bureaus to challenge accounts.
- Dispute same accounts with original creditors if the reporting agencies respond with a validity of the negatives.
- Challenge the authority of collectors to operate in your state.
- Negotiate with collectors on the amount you want to pay them.
- Negotiate with collectors to delete a collection account from your report in return for paying them.
- Reduce the spending limit on your cards to a minimum of 20 percent of the total limit.
- Talk a close relative or partner with a good credit record to sign you up as a cardholder so that the good activities on the card can also be reported on your file.
