Over the past few decades, the number of research conducted on tinnitus have soared sky high. One such study came up with a notion that irrespective of the cause of this ailment, there is a common pathway through the brain which results into tinnitus amongst all individuals.
This pathway is referred as a chemical receptor commonly called as gamma-aminobutyric acid-benzodiazepine-chloride receptor (GABA/BZ/Cl). A brain scan has revealed the fact that there are abnormalities and reduced chemical binding in the GABA receptors amongst people suffering from severe tinnitus. Problems in GABA receptors worsen the tinnitus condition.
GABA receptors control the central nervous system. Disability in the functioning of GABA receptors therefore leads to the problem of tinnitus. In a recent clinical study, 30 patients were treated with gabapentin and clonazepam. Both of these are anti-seizure medication. Intensity as well as tinnitus annoyance was closely monitored amongst these 30 patients. Neurotin and Klonopin were served to all 30 patience respectively to reduce tinnitus intensity as well as to reduce annoyance amongst these patients. All patients were served low dosages which were eventually increased with every passing week. This experimentation continued for a period of six weeks with regular monitoring.
Some of these patients displayed side effects like headache, nausea, drowsiness, memory and visual problems. 9 patients did not complete the entire course of action due to these side effects, whereas 90% of the remaining 21 people showed improvement with their tinnitus condition. 2 patients showed no improvement in their condition.
Whether the cure depends upon the intensity or annoyance of the tinnitus condition is a question that remains unresolved after the experiment. The study does show great promise, however there is still a long way to go. As a matter of fact, there are many clinical trials under experimentation phase to explore more benefits from these methods.
