Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a well known remedy popularly used by divers suffering from decompression sickness and by those affected by carbon monoxide poisoning. It’s also used for several other conditions like accident injuries, burns, radiation damage etc. With the advancement in the medical science, there has been substantial claim that hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) can cure tinnitus and other hearing impairments.

HBO therapy to treat diving accidents first started in the year 1917, later on after 2 decades it was used for decompression sickness. During treatment, the patient is asked to sit inside a chamber. These chambers are air pressurized up to 2.5 times the normal pressure. The patient is asked to breathe oxygen with the help of an oxygen mask. This whole session lasts for an hour or two, and repeated several times in succeeding days. Patients inside the chamber can spend time reading, talking etc.

Fortunately, there aren’t any side effects of this treatment. In rare cases, an individual might complain about claustrophobia. In such cases, the patient is allowed to slowly adjust being inside the chamber for very little time until the problem fades away.

HBOT drives the oxygen content of the blood 20 times higher than the normal state. Body parts lacking oxygen supply now receive adequate oxygen supply. Nearly 40% of the patients experience improvement in their condition even after the treatment is ceased.

HBOT is also responsible for increased oxygen supply to the inner ear. The increase in the oxygen level can give rise to biological mechanisms which has the potential for functional recovery.

Hair cells damage occurs in a uniform pattern. The swelling occurs first, followed by the loss of function. Due to adequate oxygen supply to the inner ear, this process can be reversed, and one may regain the hearing ability. Studies indicate the HBOT is most influential in treating tinnitus and hearing related problems in the first 3 months of treatment. Nearly 10% patients have experienced complete recovery with hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

A research on nearly 7700 patients suffering from tinnitus showed remarkable improvement with hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Despite the fact, that this treatment is most effective in the early stages, individuals with chronic tinnitus are also being treated with HBOT. HBOT has always been a subject matter of research for experts, and currently there are 6 new studies conducted across the world to explore more about this therapy.
