Since its existence, tinnitus has always been subjected to lots of research. A recent study claimed that the damaged cochlea results into overactive sensory nerves in the facial area including neck. Unfortunately, this magnifies the noise we hear when affected by tinnitus. This also implies that the treatment measures like acupuncture will have positive implications upon treatment.

A study conducted at the Kresge Hearing Institute involved 18 pigs. Out of the 18 pigs, 6 of them were control animals, and the rest were hearing impaired due to loud noise. Responses in the dorsal cochlear nucleus (DCN) were collected during the study. DCN facilitates in the passage of sound inside the ear. Pattern of activity were measured in all the 18 pigs. They made use of a 16-electrode array to measure the signals from DCN and from the sensory nerve. With the obtained results when the comparison was made between the two groups they discovered differences in the trigeminal nerve function. It was pretty much evident that few neurons within the cochlear nucleus get hyperactive after hearing problem, eventually leading to tinnitus.

This research revealed that those neurons which have received sensory input from the trigeminal nerve become hyperactive. When a person experiences a hearing problem, the brain organs that functions normally have an increased effect. It’s like one organ tries to catch up for the deficit of the other organ. The resulting nerve firing in the cochlear nucleus paves the way for tinnitus.

This is also apparent with those who have problems with their vision. The auditory signals are increased causing acute hearing problem. Over here auditory component is affected resulting into hyperactivity and tinnitus.

Acupuncture can prove to be helpful in such situations. It helps in soothing the neuronal overload in the DCN.

People suffering from temporo-mandibular joint dysfunction (TMJ) can possibly relate more with this study. Temporo-mandibular joint dysfunction (TMJ) is a condition involving frequent pain in the jaw, resulting into inflamed tinnitus in some cases.
