Dean Martin was one of the best known singer, comedian, and actor of the nineteen fifties and sixties. He had many hit singles and popular movies. He was nicknamed the “King of Cool” for his charming personality. In the mid-nineteen sixties Dean starred in The Dean Martin Show.
The show starred Dean Martin mostly as a laid back drunk that would suavely hit on women and host celebrity guests. Dean would put all of his talents to work for the show. He combined dancing, singing, and comedy into every show. He would always sing at least two solo numbers and also sing along with celebrity guests. Many of the songs would be comedic and just for laughs.
The TV show was a huge hit from the start. The quick-witted Martin and his cast constantly improvised on the fly, which always offered something new and unscripted. It is believed that Martin would never allow retakes and any mistakes would stay when filming.
Even with the show’s success Martin and NBC sensors would butt heads from time to time over some of his material. Sometimes he would make obscene remarks from about his Italian heritage that would angry some. The show was still consistently in the top ten even with the disagreements.
By the early nineteen seventies Martin decided to call the show quits but he was not out of the picture for long. NBC created a spin-off show that Dean still participated in. The Dean Martin Show can still be seen today. Whether through reruns of the show or DVD collections, the show still offers laughs and entertainment to new generations.
